Obesity Need Not Be an Epidemic

When is it about me? I was just speaking with a client this morning who stated that she needs to lose 100 pounds. Her hair analysis report shows that her thyroid is low, despite her doctor telling her it was normal (doctors’ tests have a huge normal range when it comes to the thyroid). She has all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, which seriously affects metabolism. Her liver also needs to be brought into balance to help level out her hormones. She told me that it saddens her so much when others just assume she ‘eats like a pig’ and she knows she doesn’t. I explained to her that when one has a low thyroid, the emotional connection is that they are often doing too much for others and not enough for themselves. The subconscious asks “When is it about me?” This is why so many mothers have low thyroid! And then they get judged for weight gain when they are simply doing too much for their families and not enough for themselves 🙁

Weight gain also occurs when a child or adult is not properly absorbing their vitamins and minerals – mal-absorption is rampant in North America. When we don’t properly absorb nutrients, we continually eat food, searching for the nutrients we so desperately need. This calls for the healing of the intestine so that it can function properly.

More and more, we are hearing that cleanses (e.g. candida, parasite) help individuals lose weight and keep weight off. There is a particular way and order to doing cleanses so that the body learns how to properly eliminate toxins and then shed weight. Stress – Its Underlying Cause

what causes stressStress is the underlying cause behind much of the illness we experience. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a perfect example of a stress-induced illness. But what is the root cause of stress? When we experience stress, we are resisting the flow of life. Stress is not caused by the circumstances of our lives but by our reaction to the choices we have made that result in the circumstances of our lives.

When the circumstances of our lives or people don’t meet our approval, we focus our energy on trying to control or change our external circumstances or the people in our lives. Or we bend over backwards to please the people in our lives. Why do we give our power away in this way?
We expend a massive amount of energy trying to change our external circumstances or other people. We also expend a massive amount of energy trying to conceal the pain of our past. Anything we want to change or we’re afraid of or angry about or refuse to accept will keep us attached to our past and the beliefs or expectations that stemmed from our past. Resisting what is will never make it disappear.

How do we recognize our stress?
We know we are resisting i.e. experiencing stress when we experience physical manifestations such as a stiff neck, clenched jaw, headache, stomach ache, sighing and tightness in the chest, just to give a few examples. Once we recognize where our resistance or stress is anchoring in our body, we are able to identify it and the triggers more easily.

The root cause of all stress
The root cause of all stress is a lack of love and belief in ourselves. These feelings generate fear …fear of saying “no”, fear of setting boundaries with others, fear of putting our own needs first, fear of not having the approval of others, fear that we cannot survive without a certain job or partner….

What do we need to do to let go of our stress?
“The crucial times to let go are when you feel the strongest urge not to” (The Path to Love by Deepak Chopra page 170).

Once we accept that this is the way it is going to be with this job or this situation or this person or this quality about ourselves that we don’t like, we can stop resisting and let things flow effortlessly. This concept is referred to as “surrendering.” Our ego mistakes surrendering for failure and the end of power, but when we surrender, we transcend our ego and let go of control of circumstances over which we really never had any control anyway. We can stop forcing things and simply allow things to happen. We are most powerful when we are working with life rather than against it. Surrendering is stopping ourselves from doing the things that make us miserable, crazy or self-hating. When we stop abusing ourselves, love and healing can move in. This is when we can determine what we need to do to create joy in our lives.

4 Dietary Causes and Other Help for Sleep Challenges

Minimizing and Eliminating Allergies Part 3 of 3

In this blog series on Food Allergies, you learned to discern the difference between food sensitivities and allergies as well as some of the symptoms or conditions caused by adverse reactions to foods (part 1), and how to detect the culprit foods and which foods present the most common challenges in babies (part 2).  In this last post of the series, you will learn what to do to minimize and eliminate food sensitivities and allergies. All of this information is covered in more detail in my first book “The Resourceful Mother’s Secrets to Healthy Kids.

All adverse reactions to foods cause inflammation in the body. Food sensitivities and allergies cause the gut lining to be inflamed, which subsequently makes it hard for vitamins and minerals to be properly absorbed. Inflammation is behind all illness. I want to briefly discuss the link between inflammation and illness, by using gluten as an example. A recently written book, “Grain Brain” by David Perlmutter, MD does an excellent job of explaining that gluten is behind almost every inflammatory condition, especially those involving the brain. “Wheat Belly” by Dr. William Davis discusses how gluten causes obesity, one of the conditions caused by inflammation. Allergies/Sensitivities Part 2 – How to Recognize Allergy Symptoms in Babies

allergies in babiesIn my last blog post, we talked about the difference between food allergies and food sensitivities and why it is crucial to find out if your child is affected. In this 2nd of 3 posts, we’ll talk about how to recognize allergy symptoms in babies.

Dr. Doris Rapp, a guest on Oprah’s show, has been a pediatric allergist since 1960. She has done incredible research on food sensitivities and allergies affecting children and has written numerous books on the subject. Her observations of reactions to foods i.e. symptoms, starting in the womb, are quite fascinating.
Don’t we often wonder why our babies kick us or have the hiccups when in the womb? And why do our babies become agitated shortly after we feed them? Dr. Rapp says “I have known unborn babies who would hiccup or kick hard enough in the womb to bruise the mother. These mothers should think of what they ate half an hour before the baby started to act this way. If they do, they may be able to figure out what is bothering the baby down in the uterus. One woman found that every time she ate a cannoli her baby began to kick her. The baby was having a prenatal allergic reaction and was attempting to tell the mother not to eat cannolis. The same thing might happen after the baby is born. If a baby is totally breast-feeding and that baby becomes agitated after feeding, that mother should ask herself what she ate the previous meal. The food can come through the breast milk and make the baby sick.” Good Food, Good Mood quotes Dr. Rapp on page 13.

Babies cannot be allergic to breast milk but they can certainly be allergic to the food that that mother has eaten and passed through her breast milk. My daughter, Taylor, had projectile vomiting the first time I consumed dairy and then breast-fed her. What are other symptoms in babies that can be caused by allergies?

  • Colic
  • Excessive drooling
  • Spit-up
  • Diarrhea/Constipation
  • Diaper rashes or any skin rashes
  • Chronic runny rose
  • Multiple ear infections
  • Poor sleeping
  • Frequent coughing/colds
  • Pale face
  • Excessive thirst

What are the most common foods to which babies react adversely?

  • Dairy
  • Wheat
  • Sugar
  • Soy
  • Chocolate
  • Chemicals i.e. chlorine, food dye, additives, etc.
  • Citrus
  • Tree nuts
  • Peanuts
  • Caffeine
  • Tomatoes
  • Strawberries

But a baby can react adversely to any food. Rice cereal is becoming a common allergen for many of today’s babies. We are also seeing babies react to sweet potatoes and carrots, presumably due to the high sugar content in these foods. No food is exempt from causing a reaction.

What is the most accurate way to determine the food(s) to which your child is reacting? Keeping a food and symptom journal over an extended period of time is the ONLY fool-proof method for determining your baby’s culprit food(s). This involves recording what your baby has consumed on their own or in your breast milk and any resulting symptoms within 24 hours of consumption. The journal will show the patterns e.g. every time he has pureed strawberries, he gets a rash on his cheeks.

Every time your baby is exposed to a food that they don’t agree with, they cannot properly absorb the vitamins and minerals from that food and symptoms result. Please do all that you can to determine and avoid your baby’s culprit food(s)! I am always here to help you if you need me!
